President Trump posted a map on Truth Social/social media showing New Mexico with 'Mexico' crossed out and 'America' written in its place, suggesting the state be renamed 'New America.' This followed a separate incident involving renaming something 'Lake America.' New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham responded to the post.
Coverage largely agrees on the basic facts of the post and the governor's response, but differs in tone and context. The New York Times frames it neutrally as part of a broader pattern of the president's naming efforts. The Hill centers the governor's pushback and direct quotes rejecting the idea. Right-leaning outlets (Fox News, Daily Wire, New York Post) provide more descriptive detail about the format and timing of the post, referencing it as part of a series of 'rebrands' and linking it explicitly to the prior 'Lake America' renaming, with Daily Wire noting it as an 'unofficial stab' at the idea, but without strong evaluative language criticizing or defending the move.
Frames the post as part of a broader, ongoing pattern of the president altering geographic names, treating it as a notable but not sensational development.
